The 4xMOTION permanent four-wheel drive system on the Touareg forms the basis for its extraordinary performance capabilities in extreme terrain. The Touareg features a lockable centre differential with a multi-plate clutch and low-range gear. In normal operation, torque distribution between the front and rear axles is smoothly adjusted as a function of the amount of slip. The centre differential can furthermore be locked to maintain a fixed drive torque split. The design configuration on the Touareg means that power has to be diverted to the front axle by way of a bevel gear.

Increasing traction in extreme terrain

4xMOTION can additionally be ordered with a rear-axle differential that produces a 100 percent locking effect between the rear wheels. The differential locks are activated manually at the driver’s command, using a rotary switch in the Touareg’s cockpit. Activation of the locks has the effect of increasing traction in extreme terrain: the drive forces are no longer diverted via differentials, instead each of the rear wheels transmits the same drive torque and turns at the same speed as the other wheel.

Maximum traction on all road conditions

The low-range ratio (2.66:1) for heavy-duty off-road driving can be selected electrically using the control switch for the suspension. This delivers maximum tractive power at low vehicle speeds, and enables the Touareg to tackle gradients as steep as 100 percent (45°).
